Freshman- Head Coach
The Aliso Niguel Football Program is excited to have Coach Melbon back for a fourth season, serving as our Head Freshmen Coach. Melbon currently teaches Physical Education here at Aliso and has been a teacher in the Capo district since 1999 spending his entire career at Dana Hills until making the switch to come join the Mighty Wolverines! Coach Melbon was the Head Football Coach at Dana Hills from 2008 to 2010, where the Dolphins finished with a successful overall record of 18 wins and 14 losses under his leadership. Coach Melbon is a 1982 graduate of Corona del Mar High School where he played football and baseball. He was captain of the 1981 CIF Championship Sea King Baseball team. He attended Cal State Fullerton where he received his B.S. in Physical Education and he earned his teaching credential through Chapman University. His past coaching experiences include Corona del Mar 1985 – 1991, Santa Ana Valley 1992 – 1995, Dana Hills 1996 – 2001, Newport JAAF 2002 – 2005, CDM 2006, Orange Coast College 2007, Head Coach Dana Hills 2008 -2010. Coach Melbon resides in Laguna Hills and has been with his beautiful wife Bebe for 20 years.
Freshman -Defensive Coach & Linebacker Coach
Coach Mashburn begins his 22nd season coaching football in the district. He has served numerous roles as part of coaching staffs at ANHS, CVHS and THS. He is happy to be serving as a Freshman coach this year at his alma mater. He hopes that these student athletes will embrace the game and love of it as he did when he was a Freshman here. When not coaching football, he serves as the Athletic Director for ANHS and is also the girls’ track and field head coach. He is married to his beautiful, loving, patient wife Mandy. They have 3 daughters, Leilind, Lexie and Lacey, who keep them both very busy with their dance, singing and theater obligations throughout the days.
Freshman- Running Backs/Linebackers
Coach Chubb played both running back and linebacker at Laguna Hills High School, where he was a three-year Varsity starter. He then attended San Diego State University where he majored in Business/Marketing and played rugby. He has been involved with the Wolverine Football program since 1996, and a member of the frosh coaching staff since 2003. Coach Chubb’s goal for this year’s frosh team is for the young men to transform from a group of individuals to a real team, where the players all play for each other instead of just for themselves.
Freshman- Defensive Line / Running Backs
Donnie Ellis is a former Oakland Raider. This is his third year coaching at Aliso Niguel HS after coaching the 2011 and 2013 seasons as Running Back and Defensive Line coach. Coach Ellis has posted two winning seasons with a record of 19-1 (2017 record 9-1, and 2018 record 10-0) as the Freshmen Offensive Line and Defensive Line coach. He is BLESSED to be back.
Ellis attended Istrouma Senior High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he was 1st Team All District, 1st Team All Parish, and Honorable Mention All-American. He then attended both USL and LSU. After moving on from college, Ellis’ coaching experience has ranged from Running Backs, Receivers, Defensive CB’s, D-line, O-line, Quarterbacks, and Linebackers. Ellis has successfully coached professional athletes, college level, high school, and even down through youth football.
On the professional level, Ellis has been a strength and conditioning coach at Soka University of America for 11 years and trained his nephew BenJarvus Green-Ellis (aka “The Law Firm”) of the New England Patriots and Cincinnati Bengals. He has also coached at Santa Margarita Catholic HS with Coach Jim Hartigan, El Modena HS, Fullerton JC and Woodbridge HS.
At the youth level he coached for Saddleback Valley Pop Warner and the Mission Viejo Cowboys from 2014-2017. Coach Ellis has specific knowledge and expertise in personalized workouts such as high-level strength and conditioning training, nutrition counseling and body composition testing. He has affiliations with 24 Hour Fitness, Bally’s, and Irvine Sports Club. As a coach, he incorporates his professional football background in strategies and utilizes an emphasis on teamwork play strategies and positive motivation. Ellis has been a professional model and done commercial and TV work.
Coach Ellis is supported by his wife Pam and their son Sky (current ANHS player) and his adult children Derick, daughters Megan & Nalonnie, mother Betty, and Sky’s grandparents Helene & Don Reiner.
Freshman - Defensive Line
Coach Colwell will be returning for his 12th season as an assistant coach on the Freshmen football team. Coach Colwell has served as both D-line coach, Linebackers’ coach, and Defensive Coordinator in previous seasons with the freshmen teams. In addition to coaching freshmen football, Coach Colwell is the head coach of the Aliso wrestling team, a position held for 9 years now. Coach Colwell has been teaching in the district for over 20 years and has taught social studies at Aliso for the past 13 years. Freshman - Defensive Backs, Wide Receivers, Special Teams
This is Coach Roman’s fourth year coaching football at Aliso Niguel. Prior to joining the Wolverine staff, he coached at 2 of his alma maters. Roman graduated from Laguna Hills High School in ’95 and coached there for 10 years. He earned a BA from the University of New Haven (CT) in 2000 and coached there for 7 years. At Laguna Hills Roman was a 4-year starter with 52 game starts from 1991-1994. While attending Saddleback College (’95-’96) he played for the Gauchos football team and was part of their ’96 National Championship. At the University of New Haven, where he played from 1997-1998, they were Division II finalists in 1998. Coach Roman enjoys coaching at the high school level because it allows him to coach with friends, watch the players grow, and be part of life lessons learned. Adam Roman and his beautiful wife, Sabrina, have a 3-year old son Luke and 2-year old son Noah.
Coach Newell is beginning his high school coaching career at ANHS. He grew up in Mission Viejo and graduated from Capistrano Valley High School in 1991. There he was blessed to have won two C.I.F. Championships - Football (‘90), Baseball (‘91). Coach Newell graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in psychology. He currently resides in Aliso Viejo with his wife and two sons.
